BUTTERFLY EFFECT – CHAPTER I

The flapping wings of a distant butterfly can cause a hurricane

A single act, no matter how small, can cause great change”

Julia read from her friend’s Instagram post. “Is this real? Can a small act really make a great change? she asked herself. She was seated comfortably near the window in an extremely cramped bus. The bus was overflowing with people since it was the peak time of the day.

Every day Julia would board the 6.00 bus. It was a miracle that her office is just steps away from the depot and because of that she always finds a seat. Every day, she would choose a window seat, put on her earphones and lose herself in her social media.

That night, a little butterfly passed by the window and a brilliant idea sparked. “Hey butterfly, this better be worth it” Julia mumbled and looked around. There was a woman in her mid-thirties struggling to cope with the ever-growing crowd. Her eyes were already weary from a hard day’s work. Julia got up and said to the woman “you look very tired. Come on, sit here”. The woman looked surprised – as if a Genie has granted her greatest wish. “O thank you so much” the lady replied and sat down with a huge smile. Now it was Julia’s turn to be squeezed in this hell of an 2hr ride. “let’s see how this story ends” Julia mumbled with a smile and held onto the railings real tight.

When the clock struck 8, little Jason dropped whatever he was doing and turned his attention towards the door. At this exact moment his mom would be barging through the doors drenched in sweats and breathing heavily as if she had just fought a battle. Indeed, her 2hr travel in that cramped bus is a battle of the 21st century. But today, she entered the doors with a wide smile. “Am I dreaming” Jason rubbed his eyes once again not able to believe his mom’s smile. She walked towards him with a huge grin and hugged him tight. “I’m so happy today Jas. You know what? a young lady gave me her seat today! It felt like a miracle. so, let’s celebrate. Let’s make your favorite cupcakes. But you should finish your homework before that little boy” She said with her radiant smile. Jason was so excited at the mention of his favorite blueberry cupcakes, he finished his entire homework in lightning speed while frequently losing himself in the warm smell of cupcakes that filled the air. He felt grateful to that unknown young lady who made his mom smile. “Thank you so much” he said to the sky and ran back to the dining table.

Alex parked his car while sighing to himself “Ha another night of constant Wailing”. Another night of his wife constantly talking about her naughty students, how hard it is to be a teacher and how dark the world is. Indeed, Alex knew how hard it is to be a teacher to 10year old boys. Their infinite energy and endless questions and merciless talking. It is one of the most tiring jobs in the world. But still he wished his wife could just stop worrying about her world and start looking at him. Stop talking and listen to him once in a while. He too had a rough day and messed up pretty hard and was embarrassed in front of everybody. He wished she could take a glimpse in his world too. He had been a constant listener and somehow these days he felt lonely even though he was sitting just by her side. “Is it too much to ask?” Alex mumbled to himself as he made his way to the doors. “I’m home” his weary voice echoed through the walls. “O love, you’re back. You know what happened today? Jason….”, his wife began to speak. “There she goes again” Alex sighed and walked towards the TV. “Jason did all his homework perfectly. all my years of hard work really paid off. So How was your day?” his wife said with a beautiful smile. The smile he fell in love with. Alex dropped the remote and froze on spot. “Did I heard wrong?” he thought. “Hey I asked how was your day?” She asked again.

Without even knowing Alex walked towards her and hugged her tight. “Love, what happened? What’s wrong? Are you sick? Did you had a rough day?” she asked while hugging him tight. “You know what? I’ve been dying to hear those words from you. You don’t know how powerful those are. Just a simple how was your day? means a lot. Every day I listened to your stories with all my heart, but deep inside I wished you could ask me too” Alex said. “So now tell me, what did that stupid boss of yours did today” his wife said with a smile. Soon the sound of laughter filled the air. “let’s stay like this for a long long time” the laughing couple thought to themselves that night.

TOUCH THE SKY – CHAPTER II

After 3 days of endless journey, Chippy and Becky finally ended up infront of a beautiful pond. The moment Becky saw the rustling water she threw her backpack and jumped right into it.

“Wow! I missed you. I missed your gentle touch. Your scent and the way you glow” she sang while dunking her head into the pond.

“Don’t be such a show off Becky. It’s just been 3 days” Chippy scoffed hearing her reactions.

“You don’t understand Chippy. I love water. All the other chicken in the barn hate water. But I’m different. Sometimes I look up at the night sky and hear a voice telling me that I belong up there. But when I try to flap my wings, I just end up crashing down. I think something is wrong with me Chippy” Becky said, trying her best to control the tears that were in the verge of bursting out.

“Ya look at me, I’m smaller than a full-grown mango. I can’t fly continuously for even 3hrs cuz my teeny tiny wings would wear down. But every night I dream of reaching the stars and the moon. I dream of sliding through those fluffy clouds. I dream things that are impossible for me to do. Every living bird near the barn thinks I’m a weirdo, a screwup, a crack head. We are different, but we are the good difference Chippy said, while skillfully wiping the tears that threatened to fall.

There heartfelt conversation came to an abrupt stop when they heard giggles from the nearby bush. Soon a bunch of birds emerged from the bushes laughing their hearts out.

“What’s so funny?” Becky asked with a tint of anger in her voice.

“Well, we have never seen someone as dumb as you before. You are indeed born to glide through the clouds and reach distant lands, but you talk as if you are some sort of a chicken” One of the birds said.

“I know I look ugly. But that doesn’t mean I’m not a Chicken. I’m a chicken. Do I look like an idiot to you?” Becky asked teary eyed.

The bird group soon started laughing again.

“Enough” came a voice.

“Come here little girl” the oldest bird in the group called Becky.

“What do you see?” she asked while pointing to their reflection in the pond.

That’s when Becky realized the miracle that laid before her eyes.

“We look exactly the same!” Becky shouted at the top of her lungs.

“Yup we are. Its because you are one of the us. You are not a chicken. You are a part of the great geese families that fly farthest above the clouds, through storms and seas, through distant lands to escape the cruel winter and return back to our mother land” She said with a loving smile.

“Does this mean you……. I mean we fly above the clouds even during the storm?” Becky asked with excitement filling her voice.

“Yes, my little one. We fly way above the clouds. We just landed here to rest. You can join us little girl” the old goose said.

“I would love to ……….. but I don’t know how to fly” Becky replied scratching her head.

Soon a round of laughter filled the space.

The old goose shushed the younger geese and said “Well, I can teach you. It might take some time and lots and lots of hardwork. But I’m sure you can pull this off. From now on you are one of us – family and family always sticks together”

Endless joy filled Becky’s mind.

She ran towards Chippy and hugged him tight and said, “Chippy did you heard that! she said I’m family. I have a family now! I don’t have to be an outcast anymore. She said I could fly. I could reach the clouds” Becky kept on rambling with happy tears flooding her eyes.

Chippy gently wiped away her tears and said “So my little angel finally found her family huh! Stop crying you idiot. Now go. Fly as high as your hearts desire. But don’t forget me, my best friend” Chippy said while trying his best to hide his tears.

He pushed Becky towards the goose and said “This girl is so dumb. So please be patient with her and teach her how to fly” Chippy said.

The old goose nodded with a smile.

Chippy hugged his best friend one last time and began to fly away.

By now the hidden tears were rolling down endlessly. Why wouldn’t they. Becky was his best friend ever since he knew. He was a weirdo and crack head. But Becky made sure he wasn’t alone. Not even once. She followed her with her dorky smile and now even she left him. The sadness filled his mind. Soon Chippy landed on a nearby almond tree that reminded him of home and decided to rest for the day.

If I were chippy, by now I would have lost all hope. I would have told myself “The dream I’m running towards can never be mine. I’m unworthy of such greatness. I’m just a nobody afterall”. I would have wallowed in self-pity added with a big chunk of jealousy knowing that Becky just got everything I ever wanted. “Why is it she could do it and I can’t? Who decides that I’m inferior to others? Why am I such a weakling in such a cruel world? Why am I so useless? Why do everybody abandon me? even my best friend?” I would have rambled all night and would have returned home.

But Chippy, he is different.

Even if the entire world crumbles down he won’t give up.

Even if an angel descends before him and says he can’t do it, he won’t stop

He is like a sand storm in a desert.

No force in this entire world could stop him.

In the middle of the night he heard a weird voice calling him “hey, little boy”

he rubbed eyes and looked around. There was no soul to be seen.

“Is it God?” Chippy asked himself.

“Hey, little boy” the voice called again.

Chippy glanced in the direction of the voice and there stood a pair of golden glowing eyes. Chippy slowly hopped towards the glowing eyes. And there stood an old owl.

“What brings you here little boy” the owl asked.

“Well, I’m on a quest to find a way to fly above the clouds. But I haven’t found it yet” Chippy said with a confused tone.

“Don’t worry little boy.

Nothing is impossible in this world.

All you need is a little help”

“Can you see that road?” the owl pointed to a crooked street

“follow that path. It might give you what you are looking for” the owl said and flew away.

When the sun grazed the morning sky, Chippy picked up his backpack and began his journey through the crooked path.

“Will it really give me what I need? Is this the right path?” millions of questions circled in his mind.

But Chippy was sure about one thing.

Nothing that can stop him from reaching his dreams!!!
